on 2nd september 2008, we went to Semambu Water Treatment Plant.we were very lucky to see with our own eyes how water that we consume every day is being treated.anyway, we arrive there around 9am.there was a warm welcome and there was a briefing by there officers in charge there.this plant is responsible for treating and supplying water for all area in kuantan. see the pics below to see how water is being treated
water treatment plant, semambu
this is the diagrams of the processes of water treatment. The 1st step is water intake from the river...and then to the oxygenation tank followed by mixing tank
mixing tank where chemicals (lime and aluminium sulphate)were added..then the water will flow into flocculation tank(not labelled).flocculation will occur there.water then will flow into sedementation tank.the sedement will be left at the bottom.then the water will flow into filtration tank where water will be filtered.chlorine and flouride will be added and water is stored into clean water tank.
from the clean water tank to the consumers
they keep a fish inside this aquarium.but the fish had died.may be they forgot to feed the fish.haha
see the differences...before and after
in the labs where they do quality controls...they check for physical such as ph, colour, turbidity...also check for chlorine level, heavy metal and biological such as e-coli.
the replica of "muka sauk"...where water intake occur usualy far from the indutrial area
oxygenation tank..we dont get to see the tank upclose.the principle there is to increase the oxygen content i the water
mixing tank.the chemical will flow into the red pipe and then mixed with the water in the tank
water will flow along this maze.it is a very long maze and flocculation will occur along the way forming floc which is floating(see pic below)
the floc which formed in the flocculation tank
part of sedementation tank. flip were responsible to catch the floc
sedementation tank...the sedement will be left at the bottom of the tank
water from sedementation tank flow into the filtration tank(see pic below)
this is where filtration process occur.there were layers of sands and stones below
this is the where water is being stored before being distributed
our groups member
cleaning process of the filtration layers.they did it frequently but i forgot how frequent
taking photograph with the person in charge(not wearing tie).cant remember what is his post.haha
there further u r from the plant the less chlorine level in ur water.chlorine does not last long in the water.thats why ur water suplly to ur kitchen is direct from the pipe and not from ur tank.the purpose of the chlorine is to disinfect the water from harmful bacteria.take home advice:use water for cooking direct from pipe.boil the water to get rid of the chlorine...
